Unit 30 Task7a D1

Inkjet & wide format printing for bitmap displays and posters.

Wide format printers print width's between 17” and 100”. They are used to print banners and posters. However, inkjet printers aren't used for this and this is because they can’t produce large pieces of print. Wide format printers are good for printing posters because of it's high quality and it's ability to tell the difference between text and images. These two kinds of printers use a roll of print rather than using individual sheets and are known for their high speed because they are able to print at high speed while printing out good quality graphics. They are usually used for outdoor graphics like buildings and billboards because most things can be washed off without ruining the graphics on the poster.

Vinyl cutters and laser cutters for signage.

Vinyl cutters are usually used for advertising on the side of vans. Laser cutters are used in small businesses and in most schools. Laser cutters can be expensive but not as expensive as vinyl cutters. Developments on laser and vinyl cutters are things such as smoother graphics and this means that companies can have better advertising designs to put on their vehicles. On the other hand, a problem with printing out vinyls this big is that the picture or the graphics that you are printing out would have to be high resolution so they're a good enough quality when they are put onto a van.

3D Printing

3D printing has been a huge success because they help us to do things a lot quicker and at a better quality. 3D printers allow us to fully print 3D graphics at high speed meaning people can easily print almost anything that they want as long as they have the design for it. Manual prototyping is no longer needed because of 3D printing so it's now easier and a lot quicker for companies to make products. To be able to print in 3D it's necessary to have some kind of 3D software such as Cimatron because without it, it's not possible to create the graphics that you want to be printed out.

Laser printers for leaflets and flyers.

Laser printing allows high-speed printing and are usually light weight and compact so they don’t take up a lot of space.
Laser printing allows high quality text and graphics to be printed on paper. even though laser printers have many advantages they can be expensive because the ink will need replaced regularly. When the documents/graphics are printing out, they can still be wet sometimes and this means that there is a risk of the document/graphic getting smudged by accident.

When a digital graphic is produced, the person who made it have copyright to that specific graphic. This means that if someone else other than the person who made it tries to use this image or change it in any way, it is breaking terms of the copyright. This is against the law and such actions may result in consequences and an example of this is a fine. If you want to use a graphic or an image that has copyright, then it is vital to ask the creator for permission to do so. There are copyright free images which are the images such as those on Google Images. However if you want to use a graphic which has copyright, the creator may ask for something in return before permission is given. For example an amount of money. If a graphic is distributed under a license that allows adjustments to be made to the graphic, then you are allowed to change the image and use it for your own use. However, you do have to be careful of the terms and conditions of this license as they may be very detailed/complicated. An example of this is that the image may not allowed to be used for marketing a product or allowed to be released into the public at all. If these terms and conditions are broken, again there will be consequences for doing so.

Trademark is a recognisable indication used by businesses, companies etc. If a product has a trademark on the packaging then it means the product is protected meaning if copies of that product were produced by another company it would be against the law. The company with the trademark are able to take legal action against the company producing the copies. Trademark has consequences to the owners if they are found guilty to flawed advertising or to derogatory advertising. Trademark also has legal pitfalls much like copyright, which can lead to things such as law suits, loss of businesses and fines. Intellectual property is about the ownership's of creative works. If a company hires a designer to produce an image for example, the designer will not have the intellectual property of that image as they are getting payed for the image. However if the designer made the image in their own time at home, then they would have the intellectual property of that image. The designer would then have the right to sell that image to other companies for sums of money. Once the image is sold, the rights are passed over to the new owners (the company who bought the image from the designer). Like Trademark and also Copyright there are legal pitfalls which may be issues such as fines etc.
